• Had fairly high expectations of this gym, based on the size of it and the price of membership. My first shock came when I decided to train here with a friend and was charged £10 for a single use pass! They don't mention this on their website, great way to put off potential new members upon arrival. My current gym charges £5 for a single use pass, still fairly high but reasonable to try it out. I think leisure centre gyms charge even less than this, maybe £3. Then upon reaching the gym floor, the next shock came when I noticed the significant lack of equipment. There was 1, yes 1 Olympic barbell in the whole free weights area, despite there being both a bench press and a squat rack. I was there between 6:30am and 8am, so it was fairly quiet, but I still didn't get the chance to use this 1 barbell. Clearly the club isn't responding to the demand for more. What if there's people wanting to bench press while others do squats, etc? At the time I went, their smith machine was broken so this couldn't even be used as a substitute for barbell exercises. In fairness there was a good range of dumbbells, from about 6kg to 50kg in 2kg increments. However, good luck trying to use them as there are only 3 adjustable benches which were always occupied in the time I was there. The 1 water fountain that I could find (right in the middle of the cardio area) was very slow and inefficient, taking over a minute to fill my water bottle. Now here's the dangerous and particularly serious part: They don't have, or were not using any air conditioning. As a result of this the gym was incredibly hot and humid. Even doing weights, I was sweating heavily. The individuals doing cardio (of which there were about 10 - 15 at the time I was there) were surely at risk of overheating, dehydrating and falling unconscious. This is clearly unsafe and all gyms should take basic safety measures such as using air conditioning in order to ensure the safety and well-being of their members. The ONLY redeeming quality of this poor excuse for a gym was the fact that it was relatively clean throughout and what little equipment they did have seemed quite new. I did not see the other facilities such as the pool, so I cannot comment on this. Conclusion: As someone who knows what makes a good gym, and have been going to them for years, I would definitely not recommend Virgin Active to anyone. It is certainly not worth over £40 a month for membership, especially on year long contracts. I think this is a classic example of a gym which suckers you in with clean equipment and then doesn't listen to its members once they've signed that contract. But if you want to use limited equipment in a humid sweaty environment, then by all means join. 2/10 (only because it was clean, otherwise 1/10).
