• We stayed in The Salisbury having been transferred from its sister hotel The Carlton [who took the booking]. The Salisbury is in need of a lot of TLC. The decor is dated and shows signs of being in need of redecoration. In the stairwell, the electrical conduit is hanging off the wall! The tiling in the shower is shoddy and had cracked tiles. Hot water took an age to come through. The railings on the `balcony’ were covered in bird droppings. The expected sea view was a snatch of blue between a line of trees. Wifi was advertised in `some’ rooms, but when I mentioned it at reception I was told only one room has Wifi, but it is in all the public areas! My real issue was that the barman [also receptionist], having been outside to have a cigarette, came back inside and without washing his hands, recharged my glass in the optic by holding it at the rim, rather than on the stem! Who knows what might have been transferred from his lips via his hand to my glass. Perhaps it was of some good fortune that it was alcohol being dispensed which may have `disinfected’ any germs. Breakfast was inconsistent on the two days we were there and evening meal not available at weekend. No shower gel or shampoo was provided and although there was a rack in the room, there were no brochures or hotel information. Television only had 4 channels. I would never stay in this [or the Calton] again.
