• The required job was to replace rear cross member in LR defender: the estimate for the work was £1200. The actual work was replacement of rear end of chassis, and final bill was £1800 labour, plus parts, so over £2700 in total. He fitted, and charged me for, a new battery which was not asked for. I supplied full kits for rear axle seals, but he managed to lose the gaskets so he used silicon sealer instead. He broke several other parts while dismantling, so charged me for their replacements adding to the parts bill. And all of this is not allowing for the fact it took him over two weeks to start the job. Overall, he had the car for nearly seven weeks -- which makes my favourite part of the bill the fact that he passed on the £24 for next day delivery.
