The Golden Dog is a brilliant pub, serving a variety of real ales & premium lagers.
( The coffee is also lovely, if that's your thing. :) )
The landlords & bar staff are very friendly & welcoming.
Under new management, "The Dog's" large beer garden has gained the addition of new garden furniture, a new childrens activity centre, childs swing seat & new outdoor games, making it much more family friendly.
The bar has also been given a make-over with new furniture in order to bring it up to the high decorative standard of the restaurant.
The food served in the restaurant & bar is of an excellent standard using high quality, locally sourced ingredients which are freshly cooked to order on site. As it is the only restaurant in Shipdham, I'd recommend booking your table in advance to avoid disappointment, as it's very popular place.

We hired the Golden Dog as a venue for a Christening party. Food was excellent - very tasty and beautifully presented. Organisation of the event was absolutely awful! We were promised exclusive hire of both the restaurant and conservatory for our 50 guests but when we arrived, there were 2 diners sitting in the middle of the conservatory eating Sunday lunch! When I questioned this with the chef/manager he said he "didn't think we'd mind" and we were welcome to use the public bar area instead! He had no idea of how to deal with an upset customer and argued with me for 15 mins, more interested in proving he was right and I was wrong. He finally said we could use the rest of the conservatory but said there would be another table coming in, in an hour and we needed to leave them a table free so they could join our private party too!!! What was astounding was he didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with this but just kept repeating we had the rest of the room.
One reason for choosing this venue was because the French windows leading from the conservatory gave direct access to the garden for the many children in our party. Upon our arrival these were locked. I asked for the key and was told these were broken. To get into the garden we would need to exit through the fire exit, pushing a heavy bar to open the door! Hardly ideal!
While we were enjoying our food, the waitress calmly informed me that the high chair I'd just strapped my 10 month old daughter into was broken. No apology or explanation as to why a broken high chair was where a customer could access it.
She then came back a bit later to inform me that I'd need to remove my nephew from the only other serviceable high chair they had, in the middle of his lunch, because they needed it for another customer!
When we made the booking, we asked if we could drop off the Christening cake the day before and were informed this would be ok. When we phoned however, we were told they didn't have much room and we should bring it on the day. We arrived the next day at 11 (our booking was for 12.30) The whole place was locked up. So we had to make another call and were told to bring the cake round to the kitchen entrance. Highly disorganised!
The plastic chairs in the garden were absolutely filthy.
My husband asked for a knife to cut the cake and they offered to cut it for us which we accepted. An hour later when they still hadn't got around to it and our guests were leaving, we decided we'd better cut it ourselves.
To sum up, it probably is an excellent place to go for a meal (if you don't mind occasionally sitting in the middle of someone else's private function) There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the food, however it cannot be taken seriously as a venue for a private party. They didn't have a clue what they were doing.

We have eaten at 'The Dog' about 8 times now and cannot recommend it highly enough. In fact it's Sunday lunch there tomorrow. The boards outside do not reflect the inside, so do not be deterred from going in. (The draught beer is good too).

A great improvement on the old Golden Dog! Have eaten there twice now, once a sunny lunchtime in the garden and last week in the restaurant. The food is brilliant - a great chef and the serving staff could not be nicer. A lot of thought has gone into the decor and it works well. I am local so will keep dragging all my friends along.

Visited The Golden Dog today, with five friends, for lunch. We were all delighted with the food and the service and the very nicely decorated and comfortable surroundings. Two course delicious lunch was just ten pounds per person. We will be back.

went to the "Dog" for the first time in nearly four years; what a change!
Clean, the staff attentive and eager to please and the meal was wonderful. Keep it up, it`s so nice to have somewhere local that you can take guests to and relax in comfort.
