• Wonderful hospitality and excellent home cooking. Home made steak pie was superb. Alan is a terrific host, friendly and attentive - made us feel very welcome. A pub that really feels like a village "local" - hope it continues to go from strength to strength.

• Visited on the way north having read the reviews on here. Stayed at the nearby motorway services and couldn't face the overpriced rubbish they normally provide. Stayed at the Days Inn (Good!) and didn't even enter the retail area. Just drove the 10 minutes to this excellent pub/restaurant. New landlord & landlady extremely welcoming and food good & value for money. Will use again if travelling in Scotland

• Excellent village pub retreat! Whether your a Local resident, Walker, Cyclist, Painter, whoever just pop in for a very warm welcome, great affordable hot food and good banter & beer.....

• Super pint of ale (from Somerset in Lanarkshire!!) and a roast dinner to die for. This remote pub serves better food than many restaurants. Its up for sale and if I win the lottery its mine all mine!

• What a find tucked away in a tiny village some really good food and a decent pint of Elgood's Ale. About the only real pub left in the area unless you venture into the towns.

• stayed at holmlands b & b and visited colebrook arms with a party of 6 for dinner. Really warm welcome and great food. Would recommend

• Travelling the M6/M74 frequently means that overpriced burgers and fizzy drinks have long sice lost any appeal they once had, so with the help of the internet, I try to veer off the beaten path now and again in search of something that tastes of real food. The Colebrooke was one of my better finds last year. Crawfordjohn seems to be more of a hamlet than a village - it's about 5 minutes drive along the B740 from Abingdon Services junction and not hard to find. Driving naturally rules out any proper sampling of the real ales on offer, but there are all the usual tipples for any passengers you might have. For me though, it's the food that rewards the trip. The owner (affable, helpful and interesting - ex-showbiz I think) and his wife know their food - and there's a solid well put together menu of freshly cooked meat, fish and veg dishes alongside traditional bar meals, which I'm gradually working my way through, with the prices being about half what you'll pay at a good hotel but without the just-on-the-wrong-side-of-adequate portion sizes, and the production line lack of attention to detail. My most recent visit to the Colebrooke Arms (July 2012) was actually a business meeting/long lunch and made all the better by the homeade chunky steak pie with a respectably sized slab of crisp golden puff pastry (which soaked up the gravy perfectly) accompanied with fresh garden peas. Sticky toffee is my own favourite pud, although I've had a few letdowns over the years - not the case here. Served quickly (with ice cream) and again decently proportioned, followed by filter coffee. The service is friendly, warm and again, the attention to detail makes a lunch all the more enjoyable. The lounge itself is small, cozy (though I believe there's a seperate dining room) and has the obligatory log fire, and if you fancy a quick stretch of the legs before getting back in the car, there are some spectacular views to be had outside. I've yet to have an evening meal at the Colebeooke, but I can't imagine that it would disappoint. There are so many good, family run pubs serving quality food in our countryside, that I'm puzzled that anyone would settle for the insipid, awful greaseburgers and re-heats on offer at the motorway services.Sure they have their place if you want to buy a fags, a paper or a CD of Country & Western favourites, but beyond that they leave me cold. If you enjoy your food, and the thought of a peaceful and tranquil setting appeals, The Colbrooke Arms is worth a visit. If there were a free taxi service back to Dumfries - I'd give it 5 stars !
