  • 1 star reviewI walked into 'the Chesters'… intent on partaking of some lunch. I don't know why I was foolhardy enough to order a mixed grill — I suppose I had been away from pub grub for long enough to forget that the best bit about some of this gastronomy was the way read in the menu (when you could manage to read it by the dim light in the dingy environs of the pub). Let us not forget the type size and colour used — neither one of each lent themselves to ease-of-use if you were fighting your way through the listing with a visual handicap! Oh, sure, I could have had a little bit of fun and asked for the large print edition and just how far do you think I would have got? Wheelchair ramps? No problem! Tough luck if you can't see very well, though! It's the only time I have ever been served a Gammon steak that has been cut too thin and then fried as though it was crispy bacon! The onion rings had been dropped into cooking oil that was just above its freezing point and them brought gently up to temperature over the course of twenty minutes… thus ensuring the maximum absorption of the cooking oil into the batter and the onion itself. The final effect was positively mouth-watering, when you cut into the outside shell of the batter and a pool of oil ran out and puddled on the surrounding plate! I was offered a replacement portion of onion rings, when I complained, but I had quite gone off the idea of eating anything like it. The condition of the Gammon was excused on the basis of it being similar to that of crispy bacon… utterly failing to take into account that this was not bacon and never designed to be cooked until it was crispy. I wasn't offered a replacement for this. Interestingly enough, the whole way in which I was asked whether my food was okay was as something of an afterthought. The lady in question asked me and was already moving off expecting the answer that all was well and it was quite obvious that it came as a surprise to her that anybody was prepared to do anything apart from come back with the expected answer that all was well, fine, and dandy! There was visible irritation when this lady's progress had to be halted and she had to stop and listen to me, a paying customer! I won't be eating there again until the "under new management" sign comes and goes outside the place!
